This document gives a short description which decisions have to be made before creating a new web site.
C&CZ is not the communications department, officially all communication and therefore web sites should be
provided and endorsed by the communication department.
However, sometimes a web site is actually an application with a web interface and this can usually not be provided via the official communication website.
Preferably a site with a URL like https://<somesite>.science.ru.nl is used, but if necessary, we can request
an additional domain under whatever toplevel you need. Be aware that this is most likely against the official
policy regarding websites.
The are various ways to create and host a web site.
- GitLab pages
- Here the web sites’ “code” lives in side a Git repository and our GitLab serves the content automatically. See GitLab’s documentation.
- Virtual machine
- We hand you a virtual machine (with root access) and you are fully in control over the software you want to run for you website.
- Uncloud
- We give you an Uncloud cluster and you can run a website using (essentially) Docker Compose. For instance Ghost is a simple CMS you can run.
