Overleaf

Over the years we’ve had some requests to run an Overleaf instance for science users. To integrate this well in our environment we would need the enterprise version, which costs about € 8,- per user per month. This is prohibitive expensive for us to run, because we would need to pay for all science users, so we will not be pursuing setting up Overleaf any further in the science domain. There are alternatives for this setup, they may or may not work for your use case: ...

Science login A Science login provides faculty students and employees access to services like networked storage, computer labs, JupyterHub, clusternodes and GitLab & Mattermost. A Science login usually resembles your name and does not contain periods, capital letters or an at sign (@). For example johndoe. All settings related to your Science login, like setting your password, MFA, storage, groups and email aliases can be managed in DIY. See the DIY article for more information. Data storage

Introduction In our Faculty, different types of data storage are offered: Storage class Description Risk for data loss Home directories Small (several GB), reliable, backed up storage for individuals low Network shares Larger (1-200 TB), reliable, backed up storage for individuals or groups low Local storage Not backed up storage on desktop computers and cluster nodes, likely to be lost in case of a hardware problem or when the machine gets reinstalled high Home directories Your Science login comes with a home directory of 5GB at no costs. This is a safe place to store your work related documents. Home directories are stored on reliable hardware and backed up automatically. If you need more than 5GB of storage, you can enlarge it on DIY. Before doing so, you may want to clean up some data. ...

High Performance Computing

At the faculty of science, C&CZ manages a number of compute clusters and we have our own computer room with a few dozen racks for server hardware and also some racks in the Forum computer room. Managed clusters The largest cn-cluster is heterogeneous: it holds nodes purchased by individual departments as well as a number of nodes purchased by C&CZ, which FNWI departments may use after approval. The cn-cluster includes nodes with a GPU with CUDA cores. All nodes use SLURM as cluster software; regular maintenance is performed according to the Compute Cluster Maintenance policy. ...

NB: as of December 2022, not all science logins are allowed to login on the login servers anymore. Should you have trouble logging in on our loginservers, please contact us. Login servers A few secure shell servers are available for Students and Staff of the Faculty (everyone with a Science account). You can use them just as you like, as long as you do not cause problems for other users. ...

PCs & computer labs

C&CZ manages a large number of machines that anybody with a Science-account can use. The PCs in the computer labs run Ubuntu Linux; the study area, the library and the laptop pool run Windows, where students can login with their S-number and RU-password. C&CZ also manages (for departments) workstations with Ubuntu Linux. The computer labs are available for general use by anybody with a Science login, all RU employees and students, and guests with a temporary login. ...
