1407: NFS problems under investigation

When we moved the gateways of our networks from the old location to the new firewalls, we have received some complaints about NFS filesystems having slowness, longer delays or unavailability. In general NFS should never be a requirement for a clusternode job if you can avoid it, because this I/O is always much slower than local I/O from /scratch. We are investigating how we can optimise the network to resolve this issue, but we are hard pressed to know the exact cause of the problem....

1415: Clusternode maintenance day - February 6th 2026

Every half year we do clusternode maintenance, with at least a package ugprade and a reboot, but sometimes other maintenance can happen, such as changes in filesystems or network configurations. The upcoming date for this maintenance is February 6th, 2026 (Friday)

1417: Network changes websites

To make the network less complicated and more easily manageable, we need to make vlans for the subnets 131.174.8.0/24 and 131.174.9.0/24, this will involve some servers getting a new ip address. This affects firewall rules as well. We must coordinate this with ILS networking and the changes will cause disruptions between a few minutes up to a quarter of an hour. 1196: Problem with mail delivery from RU Exchange

Monday morning several employees of FNWI were affected by a fault within the RU Exchange design whereby they could not send their mail to recipients outside of the RU Exchange (i.e. @science.ru.nl, @cs.ru.nl or elsewhere). ISC had added two additional servers to the RU Exchange service the week before, which were not yet allowed to drop their outgoing mail on designated servers for that purpose. Not all FNWI employees using RU Exchange were affected, however, since four out of six servers were still functioning properly and employees using e....

1195: Maintenance network Serverroom FNWI in Huygens building

The central network switch in the serverroom at the Faculty of Science will be restarted in connection with an software upgrade. Many servers and services are not available for approx 20 minutes.

1193: Network failure in Huygens wing 8

In Huygens wing 8 a network switchmodule crashed. Several users lost their connection to the data and telephone network for some time. The switchmodule has been replaced.

1194: VPNsec (and RU VPN) problem with new RU firewall

The new RU Fortigate firewall, that is in place since December 13, manages fragmented IP packets inconsistently. Depending on the VPN client and its settings, this can cause problems for VPN users. The ISC found a solution for the cenral RU VPN in changing the configuration of the RU VPN as of 2016-12-19 15:50 hours. While waiting for the final solution, a temporary workaround has been used in the Fortigate firewall on April 19, which makes the problem disappear....

1192: Network failure in Huygens wing 5

In Huygens wing 5 a network switchmodule crashed. Several users lost their connection to the data and telephone network for some time. The switchmodule has been replaced.

1190: Maintenance indoor Vodafone cellphone network Huygens

Due to maintenance of the indoor cellphone equipment, this equipment will be out of service for one hour max on Monday December 5th.

1191: Poster printer "kamerbreed" broken

The printer has to be repaired. Spare parts have been ordered. We hope to have the printer operational again this month.

1189: Some machines down due to failed power distribution unit

Due to a failed power distribution unit (PDU) a network switch powered down. As a result of that the mentioned machines lost their network connectivity. After reconnecting the switch to a different PDU, the machines were reachable again.
