1407: NFS problems under investigation

When we moved the gateways of our networks from the old location to the new firewalls, we have received some complaints about NFS filesystems having slowness, longer delays or unavailability. In general NFS should never be a requirement for a clusternode job if you can avoid it, because this I/O is always much slower than local I/O from /scratch. We are investigating how we can optimise the network to resolve this issue, but we are hard pressed to know the exact cause of the problem....

1415: Clusternode maintenance day - February 6th 2026

Every half year we do clusternode maintenance, with at least a package ugprade and a reboot, but sometimes other maintenance can happen, such as changes in filesystems or network configurations. The upcoming date for this maintenance is February 6th, 2026 (Friday)

1417: Network changes websites

To make the network less complicated and more easily manageable, we need to make vlans for the subnets 131.174.8.0/24 and 131.174.9.0/24, this will involve some servers getting a new ip address. This affects firewall rules as well. We must coordinate this with ILS networking and the changes will cause disruptions between a few minutes up to a quarter of an hour. 1158: Network failure in part of study area Huygens

In Huygens wing 2 a network switchmodule crashed twice. About 30 pc’s in the Study Area lost their connection to the network for some time. The switchmodule will be replaced on 2016-01-21 at 07:30 am.

1155: Virtual servers network interfaces broken after updates

The virtual hosts fret, wolf and vos received updates to libvirt packages, causing the network interfaces of the virtual machines running on them to fail. Solved after reboot (fret) or restart of the libvirt daemons and the virtual machines. Affected virtual machines: bfacdc03 bfacdc04 drukker est2 gitlab3 ms2 nwidc01 redmine2 smtp1 smtp2 ts2

1154: Server lilo3 and lilo4 Monday morning reboot failed

The server lilo3/4 stalled at shutdown during the monday morning reboot. Solution: power cycle. Cause currently unknown.

1153: Server comas1 Monday morning reboot failed

The server comas1 did not start due to some possible timing problems between the raid array and OS. Solution: skipping the mount of /vd0 and /vd1 during boot (key S), mounts fixed manually later on followed by exportfs -uaf; exportfs -raf. Machine failed for unknown reason at boot. Solved by rebooting.

1152: RU Internet connection down

Yesterday at ca. 15:52 a SURFnet core router crashed, taking down the RU Internet connection. At 16:09 the connection was restored. This was reported yesterday on a temporary SURFnet service interruptions page and on the ISC/CIM service interruptions page. Details can be found on the SURFnet Network Tickets mailing list.

1151: Print server printto problems

After a reboot of the print server (and waiting ca. 10 minutes) printers could be attached again.

1150: Problems availability wireless network eduroam

As a result of a short network service interruption last night, there were some problems with obtaining ip addresses on the wireless network eduroam.

1149: Fileserver goudsmit problems

System crashed possibly caused by an erroneous harddisk causing all CPUs to lockup.
