The latest version of Matlab, R2018b, is available for departments that have licenses. The software and license codes can be obtained through a mail to postmaster for those entitled to it. The software can also be found on the install-disc. All C&CZ-managed Linux machines will soon have this version installed, an older version (/opt/matlab-R2018a/bin/matlab) is still available temporarily. The C&CZ-managed Windows machines will not receive a new version during the semester to prevent problems with version dependencies in current lectures....

The ISC made setting up the wireless network simpler and safer by switching to Eduroam CAT. Employees and students of Radboud University are offered an installer tailored to the RU campus network. Eduroam CAT currently supports various versions of Windows, MacOS, OS X, Linux, Chrome OS, Android and a generic EAP configuration. In order to use Eduroam CAT, Internet connectivity is necessary. On campus, this might be the network Eduroam-config, but then one must use the RU-specific instructions

During the summer break all pc’s in the computer labs got an upgrade from Windows7 to Windows10. The 4 year old pcs in TK625/HG00.625 and HG00.201/studylandscape/library have been replaced. In TK053/HG02.053 and HG00.201/studylandscape pcs have been added. With the Software Center, users can install software from the catalog. All remarks and questions are welcome.

The Mailman maillist software has had een upgrade to a new version and has been moved to a new server. Because of subscription spam, we had to temporarily disable subscription. The new version uses reCAPTCHA as countermeasure for subscription spam. Therefore we have enabled web-subscription again.

After the FNWI data/backup meeting and because of the purchase of a new storage server, C&CZ determined new prices for network discs and for backup. The new prices are ca. 2.5 times lower than the old ones, that were set 4 years ago.

June 28, C&CZ held a meeting on a.o. current status and future of storage and backup within FNWI, a.o. because C&CZ will have to renew the datacenter network and the storage and backup solutions. For this meeting, the faculty data stewards and others were invited. The slides of the presentation (English only) are available.

Wednesday evening July 4, there will be maintenance on central RU network equipment. From 22:00 hours, central RU applications and network will not be available most of the time. For telephones no disturbance is expected. For the C&CZ services there is a possibility of disruptions: no Internet connection for some time. Please think which processes depend on connectivity to RU central services and prepare for this possible outage if necessary. Future maintenance windows can be seen on the ISC website....

To make it easier to install NI LabVIEW for departments that participate in the license, the newly arrived “Spring 2018” version has been copied to the Install network share. Install media can also be borrowed. License codes can be obtained from C&CZ helpdesk or postmaster.

Since February 2015, digital tests/assessments can be held within the Faculty of Science. Last week, more than 300 students Computing Science were successfully graded in a large scale digital test/assessment with use of the Netbeans integrated development environment. This IDE was streamed as a Windows application from cloud supplier Amazon. The application ran in a tab of the RU Kiosk App and was delivered through Amazon Appstream 2.0 on Chromebooks. The Chromebooks were purchased last year by the university to make large scale digital testing/assessment possible....
