Apache Setup In order to improve the security of websites, we have switched to a new setup for our webservers. Until recently we had just one apache httpd running on a webserver. Different websites were served through the apache virtualhosts mechanism. The main advantage of running just one httpd is that all websites share the pool of httpd processes. The main disadvantages are inter-website security and shared log files. The new setup that is chosen doesn’t have these disadvantages....

C&CZ has obtained a partner account at domain name registrar QDC, allowing us to register a .nl, .com, .org or .eu domain name quickly and easily. Many other extensions are possible but sometimes at significantly higher cost. The (technical) administration of such a domain name is controlled by C&CZ (the C&CZ Internet domain name servers). In this way Radboud University Nijmegen becomes the owner of the domain name instead of an individual employee of a department)....

students WWW by students All student associations of the Science Faculty have their own WWW service. These are Thalia (Computer Science), 1 Desda (Mathematics), 2 Sigma (Chemistry), 3 Marie Curie (Physics), 4 BeeVee (Biology), 5 Leonardo (Sciences), 6 Students who would like to start their own www service are advised to contact their association using the association’s website or by sending a mail to one of the mail addresses. If that doesn’t work out you can always visit C&CZ and talk to one of the system administrators to see if it is possible to start a new WWW service....

RU digital assessment and Chromebooks In order to facilitate large scale digital assessment, the university purchased ca. 1000 Chromebooks. For these, Cirrus Assessment was chosen as user friendly assessment software. In the future, the faculty digital assessment software (TAO, see below) will only be necessary for assessments that Cirrus can’t handle. Also the wireless network in the Gymnasion/RSC was upgraded to give this large number of Chromebooks a good wireless network connection....

Information security European directives and Dutch law prohibit the storage of personal data (persoonsgegevens) outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Most of the well known cloud services are US based: Dropbox, all Google services such as Gmail and Google+, Hotmail, iCloud. This implies that (data collections containing) personal data may not be stored on these cloud services. In addition to the law, Radboud University has issued an internal security policy that prohibits the storage of data that is classified as critical (this includes all personal data) on any (public) cloud service, even those which are EEA based....

ProQuota, what does it do ? When you log in on a managed PC, your private settings (Profile) of Windows and the applications are copied from the network to your current PC. During the session, these copied settings on the PC are used and changed if necessary. At logout, the (altered) settings are copied back to the network. When you log in, at a later point in time, on a different managed PC, these settings are copied to the new PC and your own settings are available again....

Laptop lending regulations General Students and employees of the Faculty of Science can borrow a laptop at the counter of the Library of Science, if a laptop is available for the period wanted. Security:The borrower is responsible for the laptop; don’t leave it unattended, not even for quickly getting coffee or a visit to the bathroom. At the counter of the Library of Science a laptop lock can be borrowed when needed....

Sieve If one wants incoming mail to be sorted into folders automatically or to be filtered in some special way, one can use “Sieve” if one has the IMAP-server post.science.ru.nl as incoming mailserver. To put the sieve script on the mail server and activate it, use a mail program which supports sieve. The filter settings can be managed quite easily in Roundcube webmail with Settings -> Filters. You can connect the install share in MS Windows using the path: \\install-srv.science.ru.nl\install Info Consult this page on how to connect to a network share.
